Mungo Homes and CraftMaster in Richmond VA: One Builder, Nine Communities, and a Berkshire Hathaway Parent (2026)

Mungo Homes and CraftMaster Homes are the same company. Mungo, a South Carolina builder owned by Berkshire Hathaway’s Clayton Properties Group, bought Richmond’s CraftMaster in July 2021 and retired the CraftMaster name in May 2024. Some listing sites still show both, which is why buyers shopping Magnolia Green or Harpers Mill end up thinking they are comparing two builders. They are not. Mungo closed 158 homes in Richmond in 2025, ninth in the metro, at an average price around $557,000, and now runs nine active communities from Henrico’s Varina corridor to New Kent’s Viniterra.

This guide covers the ownership chain, every active Mungo community, the Quality Builders Warranty that replaced CraftMaster’s, the current incentives, and what buyers say on independent sites. What the Berkshire Hathaway ownership means for you

Two practical things. First, balance sheet. A structural claim in year eight on a Mungo home runs to a QBW policy insured by Liberty Mutual, and behind that is one of the best-capitalized parent companies in American homebuilding. Of Richmond’s locally rooted builders, only Eagle (Markel) has a comparable owner. Second, process. CraftMaster was a Mechanicsville family company with a reputation for hands-on project managers. Mungo has kept the local staff but runs its own systems, lender relationships, and warranty administration. Buyers who bought a CraftMaster home before 2021 have a different warranty administrator than buyers who bought a Mungo home after. If you are buying a CraftMaster resale, ask which plan it carries.

Three of nine active communities are 55+, which makes Mungo one of the deepest active-adult builders in the region alongside Eagle and Cornerstone; our 55+ builders comparison puts them side by side. Arcadia is the one to watch for first-time buyers: new single-family and townhomes on the Virginia Capital Trail in Varina at prices Chesterfield stopped offering three years ago. What you get in a Mungo home

Mungo’s Richmond plans are inherited CraftMaster designs plus Mungo’s Carolina catalog, which means more variety than a typical national builder and plans that run larger (Legacy Park goes to six bedrooms). The included tier sits between Ryan and Main Street: granite or quartz, LVP main level, and a design studio with structural options but no wall moves. In the 55+ communities the draw is the maintenance package: at Charleston Landing lawn care is included in the HOA, which is the main reason a 60-year-old buyer picks it over a Legacy Park plan two streets away. Compare Mungo at Magnolia Green against the other four builders there in our Magnolia Green guide.

    The QBW warranty

Mungo’s customer care page says the home is covered by Quality Builders Warranty’s Premier Protection Plan for up to ten years and refers you to your closing documents for the tiers. The tiers are public on QBW’s own site: year one covers workmanship and materials, year two covers wiring, piping, and ductwork, and years three through ten cover major structural defects, with the structural portion insured by Liberty Mutual. That is a third-party administered, insured 1-2-10, the same structure as HHHunt’s PWSC plan and a step above the builder-administered plans at Ryan, Lennar, and D.R. Horton. Confirm transferability at contract; QBW plans generally transfer but the builder’s enrollment terms control. Full table in our Richmond builder warranty comparison.

One exclusion to know. A Goochland buyer filed a BBB complaint in May 2026 after driveway concrete failed following a February ice storm; Mungo attributed it to de-icing salt and declined the claim. Exterior flatwork damaged by salt is excluded under nearly every builder warranty in the region, not just Mungo’s. Use sand, not salt, on a new driveway for the first two winters.

What Mungo buyers say (with links)

Richmond-specific review volume is thin because the brand is two years old here. The corporate sources carry most of the signal.

    • Avid Ratings: 4.7 out of 5 across 1,956 post-closing surveys company-wide. “They made my home buying experience an easy and wonderful one.” And the counterpoint: “Quality control before closing and the initial warranty response need significant improvement.”
    • Better Business Bureau (corporate, Irmo): A+, not accredited, 1.14 out of 5 across 35 reviews and 26 complaints in three years, one from Virginia. A Moseley, Virginia reviewer in May 2025 described unresolved craftsmanship and warranty items. Another: “Mungo is not in the service industry, they build as quickly as humanly possible and move on.”
    • BBB complaints including the Goochland driveway case above.
    • ComplaintsBoard: 3.1 out of 5, 17 complaints, 88 percent resolved, which is a far better resolution rate than Ryan’s 11 percent.
    • Google reviews via Birdeye (corporate) for volume, and Yelp, Richmond office.

Our read: the 4.7 Avid score over nearly 2,000 surveys is the best of any national builder in this series and reflects the sales and build process. The BBB pattern (speed over finish, slow first warranty response) is the standard production-builder tail. Mungo’s 88 percent ComplaintsBoard resolution rate suggests it does eventually fix things. The procedure is the same as everywhere: independent pre-drywall and final inspections, every item in writing, and a firm 11-month walk.

    Who Mungo fits in Richmond

Mungo fits the 55+ buyer choosing between Charleston Landing, The Parke at Cold Creek, and Viniterra, where it is often the mid-priced option against Eagle. It fits the first-time buyer in eastern Henrico (Arcadia) or the Midlothian townhome buyer (Sycamore Place). It fits the buyer who wants a third-party insured warranty behind a Berkshire Hathaway parent.

It does not fit the buyer who wants the lowest Chesterfield single-family price (Ryan) or the buyer who wants a locally owned company with the original CraftMaster leadership. At Magnolia Green and Harpers Mill, compare against HHHunt, Lennar, and Schell Brothers.
